Ever notice how a lot of the New Jersey husband/wife health insurance groups are formed? They wake up one morning, bemoan the state of the individual health insurance market, decide that the wife is going to answer the phone, make the appointments, pays the bills, renew their vows and become a 2 person group in New Jersey. They then call their Accountant or Attorney to instruct them to file the proper paperwork with the state.
Then they proceed to the next step which is to call their insurance agent to inform them that they are now a “legitimate” business in the state of New Jersey, the papers will be filed and that they need to see rates for group health insurance. Happily, they find the premium to be much lower and the coverage to be more comprehensive than that of their current individual plan and so, they start filling out the paperwork for the insurance carrier of choice.
The agent informs our brand new business that many of the insurance carriers require tax documentation to corroborate the legitimacy of the group based upon definitions set up by Small Employer Health Board guidelines. UGH OH!
“We don’t have a corporate checking account yet. We just went to the bank and applied this morning.” “I don’t have any of my corporate documents, they’re still in Trenton.” “My accountant will write you a nice letter recommending me for health insurance.” “I can show you photo albums of our wedding.” “PLEASE, WE NEED AFFORDABLE HEALTH INSURANCE!!”
THE SCENARIO ABOVE MIGHT EXIST BECAUSE NEW JERSEY’S INDIVIDUAL MARKET IS IN DISARRAY.
14% OF THE POPULATION IN NEW JERSEY IS UNINSURED. THAT’S 1.2 MILLION PEOPLE.
PLEASE MAKE SURE WHEN YOU ARE WRITNG HUSBAND/WIFE 2 PERSON GROUPS IN NEW JERSEY THAT YOUR PAPERWORK IS COMPLETE AND CORRECT.
